The RPG-2 is a milestone in the development of portable anti-tank weapons. It was developed in the Soviet Union in the late 1940s and officially introduced in 1954. It provided infantry units with a lightweight, reusable launcher capable of destroying postwar armored vehicles.

The RPG-2, built around a simple steel tube with a wooden casing and a reusable firing mechanism, was designed for rugged use and easy training. Its 40-mm launcher fired an 80-mm over-caliber HEAT round, delivering reliable penetration power while maintaining a low overall weight. The system could be transported and maintained with minimal effort, making it an attractive solution for large conscript armies and, later, for export customers worldwide.

Although the RPG-7 replaced this model, it remained in production for decades and was extensively used in conflicts in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. To this day, it is considered a classic example of Cold War technology—a straightforward, effective design that served as the template for subsequent generations of shoulder-fired anti-tank weapons.
