SIG

Precision firearms manufacturing in Neuhausen looks back on a history spanning more than 160 years. Over 1.5 million firearms produced are a testament to the exceptional expertise and remarkable innovative spirit of this long-established company. SIG (Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft) was founded in 1853 as the “Schweizerische Waggon Fabrik bei Schaffhausen.” In 1869, the “Vetterli repeating rifle” was introduced—the best rifle of its time. By 1899, nearly 250,000 had been sold to the Swiss Army and 105,000 to Italy.

The Birth of a Legend

The Swiss Army adopted the P210, procuring 113,000 pistols. In 1953, the multifunctional “SIG Assault Rifle 57” won over the Swiss Army across the board—it purchased over 700,000 units. 100,000 units were manufactured in the 7.62 x 51 caliber for export.

In the year 2000, SIG sold all of its business divisions, with the exception of the “Packaging Machinery” division. The “Small Arms” division was acquired by the Lüke & Ortmeier Group and operated under the name SAN Swiss Arms AG.
