The Belgian company Fabrique Nationale Herstal, better known as Fabrique Nationale (FN), is headquartered in Herstal near Liège and was founded in 1889; it has been manufacturing firearms since its inception. FN Herstal is part of the Herstal Group; other subsidiaries include the U.S.-based Browning Arms Company and the Finnish optoelectronics manufacturer Noptel. While FN Herstal focuses on firearms for police and military use, Browning primarily manufactures firearms for hunters and sport shooters, including the Winchester brand.

From 1940 to 1944, FN manufactured firearms and ammunition for the Wehrmacht in occupied Belgium, using the production mark “ch.”

FN became known worldwide for its licensed production of the FN FAL NATO rifle, developed in 1946. But even in recent years, FN has introduced a number of innovative developments, such as the FN Five-seveN self-loading pistol, the FN P90 submachine gun, the FN F2000 assault rifle, and the FN SCAR multi-caliber rifle.
