Beretta (also known as Fabbrica d’Armi Pietro Beretta, Italian for “Pietro Beretta Arms Factory”), headquartered in Gardone Val Trompia, is one of Italy’s largest manufacturers of handguns. The company produces handguns and long guns for civilian, police, and military use.
Beretta was first mentioned in a document in 1526, when the Lombard gunsmith Bartolomeo Beretta received a large order for arquebus barrels for the Venetian municipal arsenal. This makes Beretta the oldest arms manufacturer in the world. The company has been owned by the same family for nearly half a millennium; today, it is led by Ugo Gussalli Beretta, a descendant of Bartolomeo Beretta, together with his son Pietro Gussalli Beretta.
Since 2000, Sakou and Tikka have been subsidiaries of the Beretta Holding Company. Beretta manufactures firearms for civilians (hunters and sport shooters) and is the manufacturer of service weapons for many government agencies and armies.
