The changing threat landscape in Europe, particularly due to religiously motivated terrorist activities, necessitates a reevaluation of police armament. As various recent attacks have shown, the average police officer, with his current armament, is unable to intervene effectively in such situations, since the assailants are armed with assault rifles and explosive vests. The objective of developing the Universal Service Weapon (USW) was therefore to create a weapon that empowers a “first responder”—that is, the standard patrol officer who is first on the scene of an attack—to intervene effectively in the situation. In addition, the weapon must be suitable for all “standard” police firearm operations. The German Weapons Journal has already tested the weapon and its operational capabilities and described them in detail.

A cantonal exemption permit (ABG) is required to purchase this firearm.
