The Border Patrol short-barrel rifles were designed and manufactured to provide a fully equipped service SBR with a focus on retaining Mil-Spec features wherever doing so does not negatively impact performance. This SBR is an excellent choice for those looking for a no-frills AR-15 that will provide years of reliable service.

The barrel is a Geissele Cold Hammer Forged (CHF) barrel with a chrome-plated bore. It is available in 11.5-, 14.5-, 16-, or 18-inch lengths. The twist rate is 1:7, and the chamber is standard 5.56x45mm NATO. The gas block for the carbine, mid, Geissele, or rifle-length gas systems is made of precipitation-hardened 17-4 stainless steel. The gas tube is held in place by a retaining pin, and the gas block is secured to the barrel by both the pin and two set screws. This redundancy in the mounting ensures that the gas block is aligned and will remain so permanently unless intentionally removed.

The Border Patrol SBR is designed to be lightweight and maneuverable, yet rugged and reliable. The MK 20 Super Modular Rail is skeletonized to significantly reduce weight, yet still provides a stable mounting platform with M-Lok slots extending along its entire length at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions. The bolted connection system between the lower receiver and the handguard ensures that the handguard does not twist or move, even under heavy use.

The lower and upper are part of the standard Super Duty Set. They are forged from 7075 T6 aluminum and feature a hard-coat anodized finish. Included are stainless steel take-down pins, a Posi-Lock safety, an Ultra Duty magazine release, and Super Duty trigger guards.

The SBR features a Geissele Government loading handle. Both levers on the handle are articulated, allowing for ambidextrous operation. The SBR comes with the H2 buffer and a braided wire buffer spring. The braided wire buffer spring provides approximately 15 percent more pressure on the buffer. This pushes the bolt group hard enough to ensure that the SBR functions even when dirty and when loading from a full magazine. The braided wire spring is less prone than the Mil-Spec spring to losing length and spring weight over time, making the braided spring more reliable in the long run.

The trigger is the Advanced Combat Trigger (ACT) from ALG Defense, which uses Mil-Spec components enhanced with coatings. ALG coats the trigger with nickel-boron and the hammer and sear with nickel-Teflon. These surface treatments ensure that the ACT has a similar trigger feel and function to the Mil-Spec trigger, only smoother and much more corrosion-resistant.
