The M16A2 buttstock adapter provides a sling attachment point on the top of an M16 A2/A4 buttstock. This keeps the weapon on the right side while carrying it and prevents it from tilting dangerously toward the head. The VS-A2 adapter allows access to the "hatch" for the cleaning kit on the rear of the buttstock and accommodates standard 1.25-inch-wide slings, such as the NSN Vickers Combat Applications Sling.

The M16 buttstock adapter can also be installed on the M14/M1A platform and retains the ability to use the folding butt plate.
